ARTIST STATEMENT
Johannes Boekhoudt (b. October 20, 1966, Willemstad, Curaçao) is a self-taught Dutch artist known for his distinctive cross-themed works, blending abstraction and figurative elements. Raised in the Dutch Caribbean, he moved to Costa Rica with his family in 1973, where he later pursued a career as a commercial pilot in Costa Rica and the U.S. In the late 1990s, after a brief stint as an air ambulance pilot, Boekhoudt turned to art following the emotional impact of the 9/11 attacks. This pivotal moment led him to follow his long-held dream of becoming an expressionist artist, focusing on human rights and social justice themes such as child abuse, domestic violence, and political instability.
Boekhoudt’s signature cross technique, which emerged in the early 2000s, caught the attention of a private auction dealer in New York, encouraging him to refine this unique style. His works, created in various formats from large oil paintings to mixed media collages, are known for their strong emotional impact and social commentary. His art has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno in Guatemala, Museo de Arte del Salvador in El Salvador, and the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.
In addition to his artistic practice, Boekhoudt is a philanthropist, supporting charity auctions for children’s causes and social nonprofits. His works are included in public and private collections worldwide, and he continues to develop new projects, staying active in the global art community. Boekhoudt currently resides and works in Texas, where his passion for art and social change continues to drive his career.
